New Wigan Athletic recruit Franco Di Santo has admitted it was hard to leave Chelsea FC.

However, di Santo believes it was the right move at this stage of his career as he needs regular first-team action.

He explained to the Wigan Evening Post: “Wigan is a great club for a young player to join, to fight for a place and learn about the game.

“Of course it was a difficult decision to leave Chelsea, because everybody wants to play for one of the big teams.

“But at this stage in my career I really need to play and I have to test my ability as a player.

“This is a very good opportunity and the perfect club in which to do that.”
