Wigan Athletic supremo Dave Whelan has revealed that would have walked away from the club had the fans managed to hound boss Roberto Martinez out of the DW Stadium.
Disquiet with the second half of last season became disgruntlement following the team’s torrid start to the season with heavy home defeats to newcomers Blackpool and champions Chelsea.
But Whelan has stood solidly behind Martinez in the face of criticism from the terraces.
On BBC Radio Five Live Whelan said: "Had they (the supporters) insisted, and even if we would have lost at Tottenham and they start crying for his head and had he asked to go, I would definitely have resigned with him."
Both Whelan and Martinez will be hoping the new signings made yesterday will help boost their campaign.
The loan signing of highly-rated Manchester United youngster Tom Cleverley is an unexpected coup and his powerful presence in midfield could well coincide with a change in the club’s fortunes.
