Wigan Athletic have reportedly moved to the front of the queue in the hunt for Hamilton Academicals midfielder James McArthur.

It is understood that the Latics are currently in talks with Hamilton with a view to signing the youngster.

He was left out of the Accies' friendly game against Stirling Albion last weekend and it is believed this is because a deal is close to being finalised with the Premier League club.

Hamilton manager Billy Reid gave a strong hint that a deal for McArthur is in the offing.

He said: “Things might be moving and, if I had played him against Stirling, he might have picked up an injury and I don't want to do something that might hold matters up."

Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion and Rangers are all reported to be interested.
