According to reports Liverpool FC have emerged as favourites to sign former Wigan Athletic midfielder Paul Scharner.

The Sunday Sun claims the Magpies and the Black Cats lag behind the Reds in the race to land the Austria international.

The versatile 30-year-old is a long-time favourite of new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson who tried to sign him while at the Fulham helm.

Scharner’s agent has also revealed that the player sees a switch to Anfield as his dream move.

It is understood that talks with the Merseysiders will take place this week.
