Wigan Athletic have lost out to Hamburg over the signing of highly-rated Portsmouth defender Lenny Sowah.
The Germany Under-18 international had failed to report back for training at the south coast club due to a dispute over bonuses.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez was impressed by the 17-year-old when his side played Pompey last season who was available on a free transfer.
However, former Arsenal trainee Sowah has opted to sign a three-year contract with his hometown club.
