Wigan Athletic are reportedly heading the race to land the highly-rated Hamilton midfielder James McArthur.

Hamilton are resigned to losing their young playmaker with a number of clubs chasing the Scotland Under 21 international.

Along with the Latics, West Brom, Rangers and Leeds have all been credited with an interest in McArthur.

However, skysports.com understands that the Latics have been leading the chase for the Scot for some time.

Boss Roberto Martinez is hopeful of securing a deal as early as next week.

Leeds have always been and will always be a bigger club than Wigan. We got bigger crowds in L1 than Wigan did in the Prem.

I have visited this area with my work and Wigan are a big club, regardless of their position in English Football.
