Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard appears set to escape disciplinary action over gesture of defiance towards referee Andre Marriner during his side’s shock 1-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic last night.

Television images showed the Liverpool skipper appearing to raise two fingers in the direction of Marriner.

This followed his caution for a reckless challenge eight minutes from time which also seemed to elicit a mouthed obscenity.

Marriner is understood to have been sounded out by Wigan officials before leaving the ground.

The official appears to have since indicated that he viewed the flashpoint as a momentary act of frustration not worthy of any further sanction.
