Birmingham City defender Liam Ridgewell has defended his tackle on Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy.

The challenge left McCarthy with ankle ligament damage.

Ridgewell said: "I saw an opportunity to get the ball and tried to do that.

"It was a freak accident and one of the most bizarre things I've seen in my career.

"It'll be interesting to hear what Neil Warnock has to say about the incident and maybe linesmen will be wary of me from now on."

Assistant referee Trevor Massey was hit in the face by a corner flag and suffered a cut head and concussion as a result of Ridgewell's challenge.
