Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy has hinted that he will remain a Republic of Ireland player as Scotland seek to secure his services.
McCarthy, who picked up a hamstring injury in last Tuesday's draw with Stoke, is determined to avoid the speculation surrounding his international allegiance for now and focus purely on helping Latics remain in the Premier League.
He told the Wigan Evening Post: "I know there's been a lot of stories going around but, as it is, nothing's changed and I'm still with the Republic of Ireland.
"Ireland believed in me, they've been great with me, they've done a lot for me and I'm happy to play for them.
"But, for the moment, I just want to working hard for Wigan Athletic, concentrating on my club football and try and establish myself as a Premier League player."
