Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has refused to publicly discuss the international future of Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy.
The Italian does not want to rock the boat about the player’s international future, particularly in the wake of the public discussions on Steven Ireland’s decision to snub his country.
It is rumoured that McCarthy could be fast tracked into the full Irish squad to stop Scotland boss Craig Levein tempting him away.
But Trapattoni refused to confirm the 19-year-old will be called up for next month's friendly against Brazil.
Trapattoni said: "At the moment, it is better that we do not speak about this.
"Do you remember Steve Ireland? The more we speak, the more Steve Ireland goes away."
