Wigan Athletic have snatched Celtic’s Gary Caldwell from under the noses of Gordon Strachan’s Middlesbrough.

Caldwell was set to be one of four Celtic players to hook up with their ex-Celtic boss Strachan, the others being Barry Robson, Willo Flood and Chris Killen.

Indeed, a medical was carried out on Monday and a three-and-half-year deal had been agreed in principle.

But Sky Sports understand the Scottish international defender has decided to join the Latics instead.

Caldwell held talks with Roberto Martinez over the weekend which now appear to have persuaded him that his future lies at the DW Stadium and in the Premier League.
