Performances more important than points claims Wigan’s Martinez

Latics boss Roberto Martinez has revealed he is more interested in the way his team performs than the points tally on the league table.

He believes that if the team performs consistently well then the points will naturally follow.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post the Spaniard said: "I don't look at points.

"We lost at Everton to a penalty in the last minute, so you can't look at just the points tally. I am far more interested in the performances – and the good performances we have had have been exceptional.

"In that respect, I feel we are probably where we deserve to be in terms of our performances."

Latics face a tough away trip to Tottenham after the international break and Martinez wants his side to pick up where they left off against Fulham.

He said: "That performance level is what we want to repeat next week and carry on striving for the consistency that our play deserves.

"On the other side, we need to learn not to get frustrated as easily as we have on occasion.

"It takes only a second to score a goal, and we need to make sure we are finding the right pattern to do that."
