Latics chairman Dave Whelan has intimated there is presently a power struggle taking place between the Football Association, Premier League and Football League over the future of English football.
In an interview on BBC Radio Five Live he was speaking about Bolton chairman Phil Gartside’s proposals for a two-tiered Premier League including Scottish clubs Rangers and Celtic.
Whelan himself argues that the Football Association is not fit to run the affairs of the England team. He believes this responsibility should be transferred to the Premier League.
He said: “We’ve got three bodies in English football. We’ve got the FA, we’ve got the Football League and the Premier League.
“And the Premier League is the most professional, it is the best league. The FA is just pure amateur football.
“It’s for the local team in any part of the country up to the England team. Now I don’t think that is right and I don’t think the FA should have all that power.
“I think the Premier League should, because it is well-run, it’s well-managed and I think the Premier League should pick up the running of the international team especially.”
