Sheffield Wednesday's bid to sign striker Neil Mellor from Preston North End has fallen through.

The clubs agreed a fee for Mellor on Friday but have failed to sort out personal terms for the former Liverpool striker.

The 28-year-old scored 20 goals while on loan with Wednesday last term but he now looks set to return to Deepdale for pre-season training.

Preston chairman Maurice Lindsay told the Lancashire Evening Post: "The position is that Sheffield Wednesday have failed to agree terms with the player and at this stage he will be coming back at the end of June to Preston."

It would appear to be in his and the clubs best interests if he came back and knuckled under. He'd be in the shop window again too.

Could be a blessing in disguise. He scored 20 last season so it looks like he is more than capable in that division. Could help us go up
