Alan Sheehan could leave Swindon Town on the bosman ruling.

Phil Brown will later decide whether to offer Swindon Town trialist Alan Sheehan a contract at Preston North End.

The left-back played in the North End reserves 2-0 win over Accrington Stanley at Bamber Bridge on Monday.

And on Wednesday afternoon, he will head to the North East to tackle Sunderland in the semi-final of the Totesport.com Cup semi-final at the Academy of Light.

Sheehan would be available on the Bosman ruling if Brown chooses to take his interest further, with the 24-year-old out of contract at League Two-bound Swindon this summer.

Brown told the Lancashire Evening Post: “Alan Sheehan is a decent footballer who I have been watching from a distance for some time.

“His career has never really taken off – it’s been a bit stop-start due to contract issues, rather than anything football-wise.

“We’ll have another look at him and make a decision from there.

“He would be affordable, but it’s not just about that. I want the right type of character in the camp for next season.

“With us not being in the Championship next season, we’re going to have to cut our cloth accordingly when putting a squad together."
