Preston have signed South African captain Bongani Khumalo on loan from Tottenham until the end of the season.

Preston manager Phil Brown swooped to land the South Africa international shortly before the loan window closed at 5pm.

The 24-year-old centre-back is currently away with his country ahead of an African Nations Cup qualifier with Egypt at the weekend.

He has not yet made his debut for Spurs after moving to White Hart Lane from Supersport United for £1.5million in January.

Harry Redknapp signed the pacy defender after he impressed in a trial spell.

Khumalo has been handed the number 3 shirt at Deepdale vacated by former Club captain Callum Davidson.

He will be eligible to make his debut against Swansea City at Deepdale on Saturday 2nd April once he has returned to the country at the weekend.

Phil Brown seemed happy, yet surprised by the level of talent the boy brings to his side:

"I am absolutely delighted. For a club in our situation, fighting a relegation battle at the bottom of the Championship, to get an international player from Spurs stinks of the quality of the relationship with Tottenham and more importantly my relationship with Harry.

"He has done us a massive favour letting us borrow a player of Bongani's quality and stature.

"The lad has a game against Egypt at the weekend. Hopefully he will come through that unscathed and we will see the benefits of his qualities.

"He's a big lad, he's a quick central defender and with the right type of coaching and the right type of mentality and approach to the games, hopefully he'll be a massive success at Preston North End."

"We saw him in the bounce games and he's an impressive lad. He's a raw talent but he's the captain of his country already, although he's a young man, which is quite impressive, hence the reason why Harry paid so much money for him in the window."
