Preston North End have sacked manager Darren Ferguson with the club lieing rock bottom of the Championship five points from safety.
Ferguson took charge of Preston in January 2010 and he guided them to safety last season.
However, Ferguson has paid the price this season after the team's disastrous run of form in which they have won only five of their 22 games in the league.
The final straw for the Preston board was Tuesday's 3-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Middlesbrough.
Preston have also confirmed assistant boss Kevin Russell was sacked along with Ferguson.
The club believe a new boss is the best way forward. A club statement read:
"At a board meeting held today the directors of Preston North End decided to terminate the position of Darren Ferguson as manager.
"The club expressed their appreciation of the efforts made by Darren but felt that the league position represented a significant threat to the club and it was felt that a change of manager might bring better fortune."
The Preston North End board have now quickly appointed first team coach and former defender David Unsworth as caretaker manager.
"I am delighted to be given this opportunity. I love the club and will give it my all," he told Preston's official website.
