Stoke City have dashed any hopes of Preston North End manager Darren Ferguson signing defender Danny Pugh on a permanent deal after Pugh's contract at Stoke City is extended.

The 28-year old left North End for Staffordshire in 2008 and has recently been given the go-ahead to remain at the Championship side for a further month until mid-January.

However, Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has rewarded his defender with a contract extension which will see him stay at the Brittania Stadium until 2013.

Pulis told Stoke's official website: "It is important we look after the players who helped start off what we have achieved over the past three years and Danny is one of them.

"Although he has found it difficult to command a place in the squad this season, he is an excellent professional and every club needs players with his qualities who can be relied upon to come in and do a good job if required.

"The impact he has made at Preston is evidence of that and he will benefit from playing regular first-team football."
