The Whites picked up their first points of the season against a financially troubled Pompey at Deep Dale to kick start their campaign. Aided by the return of Sean St. Ledger Darren Ferguson’s team looked both exciting and dynamic and were unfortunate not to score more. Striker Paul Hayes netted the vital goal to secure the all important three points which will give the Whites an almighty confidence boost ahead of tonight’s Carling Cup fixture and the weekend trip to Sheffield United.

One player who has impressed in his short time at the club is on-loan winger Joshua King from Manchester United. The teenager was a constant threat down the flanks and was unlucky on two occasions in front of goal as Pompey keeper Jamie Ashdown produced two remarkable saves.
That performance will buoy the Whites ahead of tonight’s fixture at Valley Parade, couple that with a 5-0 thrashing in the previous round against Stockport and there is no reason why North End can’t progress to the next round. Tonight’s tie could potentially set up a money spinner with a Premier League club in the third round and Darren Ferguson needs no reminder of how important that is.

The manager is now spoilt for choice ahead of this evening, as he contemplates including a number of youth team players into the squad. Ferguson gave debuts to Bailey Wright and Doyle Middleton in the previous round and both players impressed. Young full back Conor McLaughlin sat on the bench for Saturday’s league game and he will be hoping for some playing time this evening. Fitness is the key for some as Jon Parkin looks to get back to full fitness; a run out tonight would certainly help the striker. Wayne Brown is still absent for the Whites as he struggles with a hip problem, but striker Paul Parry may be included this evening after missing Saturday’s match.

Peter Taylor’s Bradford City will be eager to progress to the next round and this will be a tough encounter for the Whites. The Bantams beat Nottingham Forest in the previous round and will not be afraid of producing a repeat performance. The former England under 21 coach will be without midfielder Michael Flynn (groin) and defender Simon Ramsden (calf), but on loan Norwich youngster Tom Adeyemi may feature as he is not cup-tied.

This is sure to be a challenge for Darren Ferguson’s men, but after an excellent weekend result it is all about building momentum.
