Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has confirmed he is keen on taking Preston North End striker Neil Mellor to Hillsborough.
Mellor is believed to be out-of-favour at Deepdale and Irvine is ready to offer him a route out as long as the price is right..
'Neil is obviously a player I know very well,' he told the Sheffield Telegraph.
'He's a goalscorer and we'll need them. The situation is that Preston have made it known they don't want him but he's not out of contract and they're hoping to get a fee for him.'
Irvine has one of the better budgets to work with in League One next season wage-wise, but cannot afford to splash out transfer fees on new recruits.
He's still on the lookout for a striker to complement Marcus Tudgay and recent arrival Paul Heffernan.
And he's set to make contact with North End to find out how much they want their striker - who is still under contract at Deepdale.
