The Macclesfield Town striker has also received enquiries from Derby County.
Rams boss Nigel Clough is keen to take another look at the 19-year-old striker, who impressed while spending a week with the club in February.
Rooney also shone during a recent trial with Preston, managed by Sir Alex Ferguson’s son, Darren, scoring twice in an arranged match.
Macclesfield boss Gary Simpson hopes to keep the 19-year-old at the Moss Rose, but accepts he may leave for higher level football.
