Preston North End striker Danny Welbeck has pulled out of the England Under-21 squad for Wednesday's European Championship qualifier against Greece with a knee injury.
The Manchester United striker, who is currently on loan at Preston, was unable to join up with boss Stuart Pearce for the game at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Welbeck missed Preston's 3-0 win over Cardiff City at the weekend due to the injury and manager Darren Ferguson is waiting to learn the full extent of the problem.
"Danny has a sore knee and we won't know the full extent of it until Monday or Tuesday," Ferguson told Preston's official website after the Cardiff win.
"There is a bit of swelling in it and he was never going to be fit.
"We will calm it down over the weekend and if the swelling is still there on Monday after doing some jogging and light work it might be more serious than we hope, but hopefully it will go down and he will be fine for next week."
