Stevenage have confirmed Preston North End have asked permission to speak to Graham Westley about becoming the new manager at Deepdale.
North End chairman Peter Ridsdale had been in contact with the fellow League One club over the weekend after making 43-year-old Westley their No.1 target to replace Phil Brown who was sacked last month.
Westley took over Stevenage when they sat 21st in the Conference, but he has led them to successive promotions and they currently sit one place outside of the League One playoff spots.
A statement on Boro’s official website said: “Stevenage confirm that Preston North End have asked for permission to speak to Graham Westley with the view to employing him as their new manager.
“The club have informed Preston that their approach is unwelcome at this crucial stage of the season.
“However, as always in these situations, the manager’s desire will influence the outcome.”
