Sean St Ledger could be in line for a move to Championship rivals Middlesbrough this week.
The Preston defender, currently on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, is believed to be one of top targets of Riverside manager Gareth Southgate.
Any move for the 24-year-old would initially be temporary as Football League clubs cannot sign players now that the transfer window has closed. Boro are reported to be opting for a loan switch which they will make permanent once the window reopens in January, however Preston are financially safe so Alan Irvine's hand will not be forced on the sale.
Boro are also eyeing up Matthew Kilgallon from Sheffield United should their bid for the Lilywhites centre-back fail.
Fans' favourite St Ledger arrived at Deepdale in 2006 from Peterborough for £225,000.
