Hughes - 'Players want to be part of something special'

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has today claimed it is the prospect of being part of ‘something special’ which is attracting players to the club.

City have splashed the cash this summer, with Joleon Lescott today joining Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Kolo Toure, Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor at Eastlands.

Their total outlay is already at a whopping £120m this summer, but
Hughes says it’s the ambition of the club that is the key to attracting the top level talent.

“We all feel at the club we are at the beginning of something very special and that is why we are able to attract players here.” Said Hughes.

“We feel we are in a better place and there is an expectation of what we can achieve which we are comfortable with because I know we have a group of players which is able to compete at the top end of the Premier League."

However, Hughes has admitted it is the money of City’s Arab owners that is helping to speed negotiations along;

“But the process we have gone through is one that has taken a long time. It basically started last December when I went to the board and said these are the players we need to progress.

"We have done in two windows what normally takes a lot longer but we were in a position to do that quickly.” He said.
