Despite having been given the mother of all baptisms against the reigning Premier League champions, youngster James McCarthy is determined to impress boss Roberto Martinez.
The 18-year-old Scot, who joined the Latics from Hamilton in the summer, has already notices abig difference between the standard of football north and south of the border.
He said: “The Premier League is a lot faster than up in Scotland, but I'm looking forward to the challenge of getting into the team and playing regularly," he said.
McCarthy admits he will learn a lot from his debut even if the match was beyond his side by the time he was introduced.
He said: "I was delighted to get on but it's always hard to make an impression when you go on to the pitch at 3-0 down.
"The fans were great and made a lot of noise and I was dying to get out there. I thought we were brilliant in the first half, but after they scored the first goal a few heads went down. It was never a 5-0 game, though, to be honest."
McCarthy hopes he can get better as the weeks go on.
"That was my first game since the end of last year and the sharpness was obviously not there." he said.
"I've been training for a few weeks now and it's just a case of getting my match fitness up. But it was good to be back on the field and among the rest of the boys."
