Burnley rounded off an incredible week in their history by beating Everton 1-0 at Turf Moor yesterday.
A first half strike from Wade Elliot, was enough to claim another three points, as Louis Saha missed a penalty.
The win comes just three days after The Claret’s saw off champions Manchester United, and Owen Coyle’s men are currently in dream lad after two wins in their first three Premier League games.
Burnley started the game with a high tempo, and could have gone ahead as early as the fourth minute, when Martin Paterson smashed a header against the bar, after good work from Chris McCann.
Paterson was found again, two minutes later, this time by Elliot, but his header flashed wide of Tim Howard’s post.
After an uneasy start, Everton began to regain their composure, and Jack Rodwell had Everton’s best opening, heading straight at Jensen from Leighton Baines’ corner.
Burnley continued to probe, with Robbie Blake again looking lively, but it was Elliot who gave Turf Moor something to cheer about on 34 minutes.
Steven Fletcher cut the ball back to Elliot, and his left foot shot looped over Tim Howard, benefiting from makeshift centre back Phil Neville’s deflection in the process.
After the break, Burnley continued to press for a second, and Clarke Carlisle nearly got himself on the end of Blake’s corner to put the home side two up.
Tim Howard then came to Everton’s rescue as he clawed away McCann’s acrobatic effort.
Everton benefited from a refereeing decision with 15 minutes left, as Tony Hibbert was judged to have been fouled in the area by McCann. Replays showed that Hibbert was not touched when he went to ground.
Justice was done however, when Saha miscued his penalty wide of Jensen’s left hand post.
Saha almost made amends for his error with ten minutes remaining, when he caught a twenty-yard half volley beautifully, but Jensen was relieved to see it fly wide of his post.
Phil Dowd’s final whistle was greeted with loud cheers from all round Turf Moor, and Owen Coyle’s team were left to celebrate another three points towards their Premier League survival.
