Such fine lines are there between success and failure in the world of Premier League football.
Sean Davies was within a whisker of salvaging a deserved point for Bolton in injury time at home to Sunderland.
Instead, his head was buried in his hands after watching what must to him have looked a certain equaliser deflect agonisingly wide off goalkeeper Marton Fulop’s chest.
Rueing both his and his team luck, he said, “I think I hit it too well,” he said. “I’m not sure the keeper knew much about it but that’s the way it goes. It’ll go down as a great save in the papers.
“I’m really disappointed because when you come to a new club you want to hit the ground running.
“Fair play to Sunderland, they did to us what we wanted to do to them. We were too slow to come out in the first half.
“Hopefully that has woken us up so we can go into our next game and concentrate from the off.”
Davis looked strangely out of sorts after having a good pre-season and struggled to come to terms an impressive Black Cats display.
He was one of six Wanderers debutants on the day, and he admits there is still work to do on his behalf before the supporters see the best of him.
“It’s hard — I’m adapting to the way Bolton Wanderers play football and I have got to get up to speed with that,” Davis said.
“I have got to win my tackles, second balls, get forward and try to score some goals.
“Obviously it’s disappointing to lose but there is a lot more to come from me. Once I get a few more games under my belt, hopefully people will see a lot more.”
