Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar will miss the start of the new season with a broken finger.

The Dutch stopper, 38, picked up the injury during a penalty shoot-out defeat to Bayern Munich in the Audi Cup last week and is expected to be out for up to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his left hand.

Ahead of Sunday's Community Shield clash with Chelsea, Tomasz Kuszczak and Ben Foster are set to battle it out to fill the void with the England international tipped by his manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently hailing him as a long-term successor to van der Sar.

"He is seen as one of the best young goalkeepers in England and we genuinely see him as a successor to Edwin," said the United manager.

Van der Sar is expected to return sometime in late September.
