Preston Grasshoppers new signings' impact "fantastic"

A former Preston Grasshoppers captain has praised the early impact of two new club signings.

Richard Morton, skipper from 2004-2006, spoke of the positive impact that Richard McCarthy and Harrison Collins have had since joining from Blackburn and Stoneyhurst respectively.

Morton said: “Collins was absolutely fantastic against Sedgley Park in a game we were expecting to be much more difficult. He was particularly strong and really impressed us.”

Grasshoppers ran out 43-6 winners in that game and Morton added: “As for Richard, it’s going to be a case of building up his match fitness before we can really get the best out of him in the first team, but the early signs are positive.”

Ken Moore, Grasshoppers’ press officer, echoed Morton’s positive comments.

He said: “To get them both in at this stage of the season is great for us. We have a long injury list and we lost some key players at the start of the season.”

Moore continued to explain that a top six finish would be the perfect way to cap off an already encouraging season for the club.

“We’re not going to be vying for the promotion places, but I think a top six finish would be a great achievement and our current mid-table position is a fair reflection.”

Grasshoppers face neighbours at Fylde’s Woodlands ground on Saturday, in a match that Moore said is the “most fiercely contested” match of the campaign.

With a game in hand on Fylde and only six points between the sides, Hoppers know the result could be a key one in their season.
