Burnley put a big dent in Sheffield United's chances of securing automatic promotion with a win at Turf Moor.

A first-half header from Martin Paterson took Burnley up to fifth and raised their hopes of a play-off place.

The Clarets were much the better side and deserved to take all three points from a must win clash.

With Wolves already assured of going up, there is one automatic promotion place up for grabs.

But Sheffield United's loss left them four points behind second-placed Birmingham, who can clinch promotion with a win over Preston North End on Saturday, who themselves harbour hopes of reaching this season's play-offs.

A delighted Burnley manager Owen Coyle said:

"We stood up to everything they had and didn't have too many saves to make. But if you look at the other end, Paddy Kenny was outstanding, and he kept them in it.

"We scored a terrific footballing goal and I felt when we did get the ball down and pass and move -although it was frantic at times - we showed great composure on the ball.

"The three points were important but the level or performance is what were after at this stage of the season against a very good side who are going for automatic promotion.

Sheffield United assistant manager Sam Ellis, who also had the same role at Turf Moor under the management of Stan Ternant said:

"We knew they'd be a good side from the cup runs they had and the league position they are in, and there's no shame in coming here and being second best.

"I'm just disappointed that we were.

"If we win on Saturday then the pressure is on Birmingham to win their game."
