Burnley FC welcome a Portsmouth FC side that faces almost certain relegation after the club was placed into administration this week.
However, the Clarets’ season has also been largely a tale of woe after a promising start, having lost six of their last seven encounters. They now sit just one place above their opponents in the table.
The Clarets' home form will provide a boost boss Brian Laws however, as his side have only lost twice at Turf Moor all season.
Player-coach Graham Alexander is poised to make his return after a month on the sidelines with a calf strain.
Like Alexander, Chris McCann has also missed the last four games with a knee problem and is in line to feature for the reserves next week, although the Pompey match has come too soon.
Clarke Carlisle will take his place in defence after scans revealed he did not break a toe against Aston Villa last weekend, while Stephen Jordan and Steven Caldwell remain doubtful and Christian Kalvenes is out.
On-loan striker David Nugent is ineligible to play against his parent club, so Martin Paterson is expected to deputise.
