Burnley FC marksman David Nugent has revealed his sorrow at the plight of his parent club Portsmouth FC and hopes they do not fall into the Championship.

When asked about the precarious situation at Fratton Park Nugent hoped the management could sort out the club’s ills.

He told Sky Sports: "Nobody knows what's going on at the football club and I feel sorry for the staff and players.

"If they aren't getting paid, then hopefully the new owner that is coming in can sort it all out and steady the ship.

"I've not been getting paid either - Burnley pay Portsmouth and then Portsmouth pay me, so I'm in the boat with them really.

"It's hard for them and the results show that. But I went training with them and the spirits are all right, the lads are up for it and they are trying to do their best for Portsmouth.

"I do hope they get out of the relegation zone because I have a lot of time for Portsmouth and the fans, so hopefully it will get sorted.

"I would love for both of them to stay up, but I'm at Burnley now so first and foremost it's Burnley."
