It has been revealed that Bolton Wanderers striker Danny Ward will not be joining Leeds United on loan.
The Bolton News says United have now dropped out of the race after being unable to guarantee Ward a regular starting place because of the arrival of Ross McCormack from Cardiff City.
Wanderers boss Owen Coyle has told interested Championship sides they will pay less for Ward’s services the more appearances he makes.
It is understood that eleven such clubs are still in the chase along with League One outfits Southampton and Swindon Tow, and three Scottish Premier League sides.
“I’ve allowed Danny and his representatives to speak to various clubs,” said Coyle.
“They can suss out what their feeling is, and then myself or the chairman will then speak to the relevant party about the finance involved.
“What I have said is that if and when he goes out we want to put in place a structure where the more he plays, the less that club will pay.
“I have had players on loan myself and we’re not looking to dictate to anybody but we are saying that if you want the lad and he’s got a genuine chance of playing, then you pay less. And I think that’s a fair way of doing it.”
Coyle also hopes that regular Championship football will help Ward challenge for a first-team spot at Wanderers. He likened the deal to that which he agreed with Arsenal for Jack Wilshere.
“I believe we have got a player with potential who improved a level last year at Swindon,” he said.
“There is no doubt that he will continue to improve and my feeling at the moment is that come January we are going to have a better player – similar in many ways to Jack when he came here on loan and went back to Arsenal.
“They got back a better player and that’s why I think it’s important he speaks to prospective clubs.
“Ultimately then I can come in, have a chat, and decide whether that’s the best thing for him.”
