Wanderers Danny Shittu believes that it was unthinkable that Nigeria should fail to make the World Cup finals with it taking place on the African continent.
“The majority of our players play in European top divisions, so we have a very good team — and that is not just the first 11 but the vast majority of our squad,” he said.
“There are one or two other issues that need sorting out and if that happens, then we have a good chance of doing well and going there to make a name for ourselves.
“It doesn’t matter who we draw in our group because Nigeria is a big footballing country. There is God and football — those are the two main things over there.
“We think we can make the quarter-finals at least because we were disappointed to get knocked out at the group stage in 2002. And it was an even bigger shock not to make the Germany finals four years later.
“There is no way that the first World Cup in Africa couldn’t have Nigeria participating in it and doing well.
“The Nigeria supporters expect a lot from us, and we expect a lot from ourselves.”
