Blackpool FC battling to keep star players

Blackpool have offered bumper deals to Matt Gilks and Stephen Crainey in a bid to keep them at the club.

Following the recent departure of star midfielder David Vaughan, Chairman Karl Oyston has moved quickly to try and secure the future of his other out-of-contract players.

He also wants to persuade loan stars Jason Puncheon and Luke Varney to return to the seaside in an attempt to preserve last season’s close-knit squad.

“There is no indication on what they – Crainey and Gilks – will do yet,” Oyston told the Blackpool Gazette.

“Of course, they are going to get admirers from here, there and everywhere, and all we can do is give them the best offer we can and try to keep ourselves in the loop and try to retain them if we can.

“Ian thinks it is important to try to keep as many of them together as we can because they’ve done great things here, and I agree with him.

“At the last count there were seven players – Crainey, Gilks, Vaughan, Charlie Adam, DJ Campbell, Puncheon, Varney – that we may lose but we don’t want to.
