A last gasp Brett Emerton strike earned Blackburn Rovers victory over Blackpool in an evenly balanced West Lancashire derby.

Ian Evatt headed against the bar as Blackpool seeked to gain the early initiative, but it was a rare first half chance for the Seasiders.

Charlie Adam gifted Blackburn the lead in the 20th minute with a freak own goal as his poorly weighted back-header caught keeper Matt Gilks flatfooted.

Blackburn had further chances to increase their lead, and were unfortunate not to go two up when Christopher Samba headed against the post from El Hadji Diouf's free kick.

The Seasiders came out a rejuvenated side in the second half, and Gary Taylor-Fletcher tested Paul Robinson in the Blackburn goal with a great curling effort.

Charlie Adam nearly redeemed himself with a header that trickled across goal as Blackburn endured a nervy spell.

Robinson then produced an excellent save to keep out another Taylor-Fletcher effort, as Blackpool rallied for an equaliser.

Matt Phillips was introduced to the fold ten minutes before the end, and crowned his Premier League debut with a goal to draw the score level.

The former Wycombe man waltzed through the Rovers defence and finished clinically into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Just as Blackpool looked to nick the game at the death, Emerton fired low into the corner to break tangerine hearts.
