Blackpool FC visit Newcastle United a week Saturday buoyed by the prospect that in-form Toon striker Andy Carroll may be absent.

Carroll has pulled out of Stuart Pearce’s England Under-21 squad through injury.

The 20-year-old, who has fired four goals in three Premier League games so far this season, dropped out of contention this week for the upcoming matches against Portugal and Lithuania and has returned to St James’s Park for treatment.

It is understood that Carroll suffered the injury in training last week but still took the field against Wolves on Saturday and scored Newcastle’s equaliser.

Magpies boss Chris Hughton will hope the powerful striker will now recover in time to face Blackpool at St James' Park on 11 September.
