Goals have never been hard to come by at Bloomfield Road in recent times... until today.

It has been an astounding 24 games since a team last failed to find the net here, but on a freezing December afternoon, Blackpool failed to deliver their fans an early Christmas present by playing out a luckless draw with struggling Watford.

No matter how hard the Seasiders swatted Sean Dyche's Hornets, they just couldn't land the killer blow in a game they should have had wrapped up with a bow on the top by half time.

Fortune deserted Ian Holloway's men, as they twice rattled the woodwork amongst a host of chances in a one-way encounter.

"We did everything bar score and it was one of those days," insisted the Seasiders boss.

In the opening stages of the game, the impressive Matt Phillips struck the base of the post from the edge of the box following a fine surging run through the Watford defence.

Lomana LuaLua then agonisingly found the identical post in the 25th minute from a blistering long-range effort.

The Congolese striker had previously seen a goal-bound shot inadvertantly deflected wide by Gary Taylor-Fletcher.

Two gilt-edged chances followed in the second half, with Taylor-Fletcher firstly fluffing his lines in front of an open goal after attempting to apply a fancy finish to Callum McManaman's cross.

Top scorer Kevin Phillips should have settled matters in the latter stages after emerging from the bench, but the former Watford trainee sent a point-blank header over the bar.

Watford could have knicked the game themselves, but Ghanaian forward Prince Buaben was found wanting after somehow directing Michael Kightly's cross over from two yards on the hour mark.

Matt Gilks was only called into action once to foil Troy Deeney as he raced through on goal.

His opposite number Scott Loach was the busier keeper and made a string of saves to keep his side in the game.

As Blackpool piled on the pressure at the death, the England u21 stopper was in inspired form to save two headers in quick succession from Ian Evatt and Chris Basham.

But even following the allowance of four minutes added time, a goal never arrived and the crowd exited the stadium in woe.

Even though supporters had to endure the cold conditions, Blackpool played a brand of football that their tangerine contingent would certainly have warmed to.

"I can't grumble about that performance," Holloway said. "It just didn't fall for us."
