British men have started copying their Italian conterparts in the notorious phenomenon of "Mammismo" a new survey reveals.

"Mammismo" is the label applied to Italian men who never leave their leave their parent's home and stay tied to their mother's apron strings.

In Italy "Mammismo" has been a fact for live for decades where it is regarded as the opposite of Machismo and those involved are derided.

Now a new UK survey reveals that 79% of men questioned have returned to live with their parents at some point after originally leaving home.

And the report reveals that mothers are more welcoming to their adult sons than daughters since they are more likely to pay rent, pitch in with the housework and take their parents' advice on their career and love life.

The survey was conducted by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to mark the DVD release of Cyrus.

Parents are three times more likely to allow their "Mammismo" sons to keep moving in and out of home than their daughters who are seen as lazier and less likely to contribute.

The survey also shows that 58% of mothers can easily be wrapped around their sons' little fingers and admit that they spoil them compared to only 35% spoiling their daughters.

Sons are more likely to have their dinner cooked for them every night, have their washing and ironing done and receive a personal taxi service.

Sons also receive more cash gifts, with 43% of parents admitting to dipping into their savings to help them out.

However, although boys ask for cash more often girls ultimately borrow more; £624.18 and £689.61 on average respectively during their time at home.

The survey revealed that many parents worry that their sons would never move out and that they weren’t independent enough.

Psychiatrist, Avie Luthra commented on the results: "It’s not surprising how much boys seem to get away with compared to girls when it comes to their parents.

"Boys traditionally are often treated very differently to their female siblings.

"Kids who boomerang back and forth to their parents every time something goes wrong can have a real effect on a couples’ relationship, be that a new relationship or a long term one.”
