A Blackburn man has been found guilty of a gruesome honour killing in a frenzied stabbing driven by "rage, jealousy and revenge" against his victim.
Naeem Butt, 38, of Johnston Street, was convicted of murdering Saheel Ahmed at Preston Crown Court and will be sentenced at the same court on Friday (28th Jan)
Mr Ahmed’s body was found in an alley at the top of Warrington Street around 1.50am on Tuesday 22nd June 2010, after police were called to a report of a disturbance.
A post mortem confirmed the 24-year-old, who was from Blackburn, died of multiple injuries having suffered a number of stab wounds.
An investigation was launched and detectives quickly identified Naeem Butt as the offender.
Following a number of enquiries, it was established that Butt had gone on the run to Scotland following the murder. As a result, a team of detectives from Blackburn travelled to Edinburgh where they worked with Lothian and Borders Police to trace Butt.
On Wednesday 7th July, Butt was arrested in the Scottish capital and was brought back to Lancashire where he was charged with murdering Saheel Ahmed.
Detective Superintendant Neil Hunter, from the Force Major Investigation Team, said: “This was a particularly tragic case in which a young member of the local community was brutally murdered. The level of violence used was incomprehensible and Naeem Butt deserves to spend a very long time behind bars.
“The murder was borne out of a combination of factors including rage, jealousy, revenge and also an element of honour. Saheel’s family have acted with great dignity throughout this very difficult ordeal and have fully supported the police investigation.
“Our thoughts are very much with them and I hope that bringing Butt to justice for this heinous crime will provide them with a small amount of comfort as they continue to come to terms with their loss.
“Finally, I would like to pay special thanks to our colleagues at Lothian and Borders Police for their assistance with the early part of this investigation and their highly professional work.”
