Hundreds of fans turned up at the DW Stadium to pay tribute their respects to Terry Newton.
The former Wigan hooker's funeral cortege passed the stadium on its way to Wigan Parish Church on Friday.
The 31-year-old dad-of-two was found hanged in his attic after being sacked by Wakefield earlier this year for using a performance-enhancing drug.
Fans wearing Newton emblazoned on their shirts gathered to applaud the funeral car as it drove past.
Others held banners for the sportsman, who also played for Leeds and Bradford in his short career.
One read: "Terry Newton, a true warrior and R.L legend. R.I.P - Tez"
The rugby league player was slapped with a two-year ban from the sport in February and was understood to have been running a Wigan pub with his father-in-law.
But the ex-Great Britain star, whose sister Leanne died from pneumonia after becoming addicted to heroin, is thought to have taken his own life after becoming depressed over both his career and private life.
A full inquest into his death will be held in December.
