Preston is the most dangerous places for road accidents involving children in the country, statistics have shown.
Figures released by the Road Safety Analysis show that one child in every 206 will be involved in a road accident - five times more likely than those in the London Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.
The research found that children in more deprived areas from "families on lower incomes who often live in large council estates", were more likely accident victims than those in affluent districts.
Based on five years' of data covering over 120,000 casualties, the report shows that over the first 16 years of a child's life, one in every 27 children is reported as injured or even killed in a collision.
London Borough's Kensington & Chelsea and Richmond upon Thames topped the list for the safest areas in the country with accident rates of one child in 1158 and one in 1038 respectively.
Dan Campsall, director of Road Safety Analysis said: "The results of this study show a worrying discrepancy between different parts of the country.
"Children in some areas experience considerably higher risk from road traffic crashes than others who might be living just over the border.
"There is still further study to be undertaken and we are keen to make sure all of the data and analysis techniques that underpin this study can be accessed by local authorities to allow them to investigate how they might ensure the safety of children from their communities."
