Lancashire grammar school mourns holiday death sixth-former

A Lancashire grammar school is in mourning for a promising sixth-former who died after falling from the balcony of a Spanish holiday apartment.

Popular Grace Ford, 17, toppled from the seventh floor of a block in the party resort of Magaluf in Majorca.

Magluf has a number of mid-rise and tower-block apartments that have been the scene of a number of similar death falls in recent years.

Grace is thought to have been celebrating after sitting her A-levels when went back to a flat with another teenager she had met at a nightclub.

Police in Spain said she is thought to have returned to the apartment of 18-year-old Edward Soppet, from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, before leaving in the early hours.

Mr Soppet was arrested for failing to report an accident after Miss Ford was found lying on the ground below the apartment. He waws later released without charge.

The pupil at the Kirkham Grammar School broke both her legs and her pelvis when she fell from the balcony in the early hours of Sunday morning.

But doctors lost their battle to save her life at the Son Dureta Hospital in Palma, where her family had been at her bedside.

The Spanish police investigation revolves around how it came to be that the young man went back to sleep in his bed after the young woman fell from a height of seven storeys.

He was still asleep in bed when officers arrived to investigate.
