A total of £2,551,673 worth of property was recovered in 2009 thanks to anonymous calls made to Crimestoppers.

Statistics from last year show that 2858 calls were made to crime-fighting charity, resulting in 613 arrests and over £1.6m worth of drugs being recovered.

The encouraging results also reveal that 17 firearms and 18 knives were acquired across the UK.

Crimestoppers operates across the UK and enables anyone to provide information about those involved in criminal activity without ever revealing their identity.

Kay Armstrong, Crimestoppers co-ordinator at Lancashire Constabulary, said: "I am delighted with our performance last year which shows calls to Crimestoppers really do make a difference.

"Many of those arrested or charged as a result of Crimestoppers information are not known to the police or suspected of the crime in question which proves just how valuable it can be to an investigation."

She added: "I would like to take this opportunity to thanks all those people who called Crimestoppers last year and would encourage residents to keep on calling - their support has made the streets of Lancashire even safer."

All information received by Lancashire Crimestoppers is valuable and can lead directly to offenders being arrested and charged.
