All bets are off on coldest ever January

Popular bookie Paddy Power has suspended betting and is already paying out on this month being the coldest January on record in the UK.

The news comes despite 2010 being only ten days old.

Somewhat unbelievably, they are even taking bets on London being colder than the North Pole at any time this week, the odds coming in at 100/1.

The bookie had been forced to slash its odds on January freezing its way into the record books after a flurry of bets placed by sharp-witted punters saw the odds tumble from 5/1 into 4/6.

Paddy Power said: "We may be a few grand lighter this morning but it's a small price to pay to brighten up an otherwise freezing day for our punters. Fair play to them!"

A number of weather specials are on offer at the bookie, perhaps the most intriguing seeing the odds for the temperature to break the UK record low of -27.2° C shorten from 12/1 to 9/4.

Cold specials:
9/4 Temp to break record low in UK of -27.2° C (From 12/1)
4/1 Celebrity Housemate to quit the BB House citing the Cold Weather as the reason
5/1 2010 to be the Coldest on record in UK (From 7/1)
10/1 London to have a recorded temp colder than Moscow any time this week

Where will London be colder than this week?
9/4 Glasgow
6/1 Chicago
10/1 Moscow
100/1 North Pole
