Moors killer Brady - lawyer seeks new meeting

A lawyer acting for the mother of Moors Murders victim Keith Bennett is demanding a new meeting with Ian Brady in bid establish where the body was buried.

David Kirwan, who represents Keith’s mother Winnie Johnson, has met with child killer Brady twice before at top security Ashworth Hospital.

Now he hopes and the 71-year-old serial killer will reveal - as a sign of remorse - where he interred the body of schoolboy Keith on Saddleworth Moor, near Oldham, Lancs.

David Kirwan said: “I met Ian Brady twice in 2007 and he was in remarkably good health for a man on hunger strike.

“To begin with he said he would help police find the body of Keith Bennett but he suddenly disengaged and refused to co-operate.

“I am hoping it will be a case of ‘third time lucky’ and he will finally cough up the information that will help us find Keith’s body.

“Winnie has lived with this for over 40 years now and Brady is the only person who can ease her suffering. I am hoping he will co-operate as a final act of contrition, we need to put this issue to rest.”

Keith Bennett was killed in 1964, Brady and his accomplice Myra Hindley admitting murdering the 12-year-old and dumping his body on Saddleworth Moor but he has never revealed the exact spot.

He and Hindley also murdered Lesley Ann Downey, 10, John Kilbride, 12, Pauline Reade, 16, and Edward Evans, 17. At the time, the judge described him as “wicked beyond belief, with no reasonable chance of reform”.

This week it was reported that it has cost taxpayers £3m to keep him alive since he began his hunger strike in Ashworth ten years ago. He is force fed a liquid nutrition mix into his stomach twice a day.

Mr Kirwan added: “I would dispute Brady’s figures, they are a gross exaggeration. He is desperate to get out of Ashworth and into the mainstream prison system, and I think if he were to help me find Keith’s body the authorities might just take his wishes more seriously.

"I am fully prepared to meet and speak to him, I will deal with anybody if it helps find Keith’s body.

“Many people believe we should simply let Brady rot and stop force-feeding him but I want him to stay alive long enough to reveal the whereabouts of Keith’s body.

“He’s an extremely intelligent man and I am utterly convinced he knows exactly where Keith’s body is.”
