Home Secretary Alan Johnson told a meeting in West Lancashire that Labour should forget any thoughts of changing its leadership.
Mr Johnson, who is often touted as a possible replacement for the Prime Minister, was guest of honour at the 2nd West Lancs Constituency Labour Party Dinner.
He told the gathering at Edge Hill Universtiy in Ormskirk that "unity" was vital in the battle for victory at the ballot box in the General Election - widely expected to be called next may.
"I believe we have the absolute best leader of our party. There is no-one else who can do the job as well as Gordon Brown," he told more than 150 guests who were at the dinner hosted by MP Rosie Cooper.
He also used a footballing analogy to analyse the state of the opinion polls and the mood of the electorate.
He said the Conservatives had now convinced a majority of the electorate that they have policies worth supporting.
And he insisted that by uniting behind Gordon Brown and proclaiming the list of Labour's achievements and its policies for the future, a "elusive fourth term" could be secured.
He said: "I don't get the impression that the Tories are wining six - nil. I think we are two down at half time with everything to play for."
Speaking on the BBC One show he had also said: "We cannot as a team stand in the middle of the pitch deciding who our captain should be while the other team runs rings around us.
"We have to unite behind our party, we have to defend our record, we have to explain our vision, we have to display our unity."
