Recession puts couples off having children

Couples are putting off having babies due to concerns over their ability to look after a child financially, according to a new survey for magazine Financial Planning Week.

In the second of a series of polls during September, two-thirds of young couples said their financial position had impacted on their decision to start a family.

However, few are doing much to improve their situation with the same proportion saying they have not looked into how to best achieve their financial goals.

Nick Cann, chief executive of the Institute of Financial Planning, says; "This survey suggests people are holding off on having children because they don’t think they can afford to give them the type of comfortable upbringing we all wish for as a young family.

"However, if they sat down and considered their goals and ways to achieve them, they may realise their dreams are not as out of reach as they believe."

Holly Cook, site editor for Morningstar.co.uk, which ran the poll, commented; "The poll results would indicate some reluctance among respondents to assess their financial goals.

"It’s perhaps unsurprising given the financial turmoil of the past two years, but with the UK economy widely-predicted to return to growth in 2010, respondents might yet find reason to take stock and actively address their finances."

Worryingly, the survey also found that more than half of those asked are failing to budget each month to ensure they are living within their means.
