Survey finds north-west to be meanest region in the country

The north-west is the least friendly region, according to the rest of the country.

A national survey has found Lancashire and Manchester residents need to cheer up.

But north-westerners actually consider each other to be friendly and approachable, with 86 per cent of people living in Greater Manchester claiming they are kind to their neighbours.

But it seems that from the outside, the north west is a mean-spirited place.

The survey was done as part of a campaign by Japanese car company Nissan in a bid to give away a CARED4 Nissan Qashqai to a good samaritans who goes out of their way to be kind to others.

Just 32 per cent of people in the two counties do activity in the community, such as volunteering or youth work.

The most common act of kindness was passing on recommendation on local businesses and restaurants with 68 per cent.

Less than a third of locals questioned (27 per cent) claimed they had recieved the "neighbourly" act of loaning a household item.

Surprisingly 40 per cent of northeners admitted nobody asks them how their day was or how they are.

There was a small saving grace for the north west on the kindness front, however. Only a quarter (24 per cent) claimed they would be tit-for-tat in nasty behaviour with a neighbour.

Yet only 42 per cent said they would stay calm and be unaffected if someone was unkind to them.

Richard Braithwaite of the Nissan CARED4 dealership in Ardwick, said of the search for kindness among Manchester folk: "We’re hoping that the people of Manchester step up to the mark to prove to everyone how kind our city is.

"It would be fantastic to be able to say that Manchester has the the kindest person in the UK and reward them with a CARED4 car - you might even receive a random act of kindness yourself - what are you waiting for?"

The survey also says Scotland is the least kind place across the whole UK.
